The finer things…

The finer things…

There is so much I should be doing right now. Things like, packing boxes, patching holes in the wall, cleaning out refrigerators and the such. But since I’m quite the procrastinator and I am over the great move of 2009 like you would not believe, I figured we need to talk about something, important.

Deeeeeeep theological things.

Things that make you go “hmmmm”.

And things that you will lay in the bed late at night thinking, “Wow that was really deep on Nicki’s blog today.”

Imaginary Friends.

We’ve had some. Yup. Just a few.

I will never forget the day I was introduced….excuse me…the world was introduced to…”Spider”. Taylor was no more than 2 1/2 years old and we were at a Dr.’s appointment in which Taylor was very anxious about. Because at this point in her wee little life, she had already been in the hospital three times and been poked and pried more than a normal two year old should have to be.

However, on this particular day, Taylor discovered the art of bringing a “friend” along through these tough circumstances of life. Because after all, the bible does tell us that two are better than on and I just knew I had a little bible scholar on my hands at the age of two years old. {wink}

Well it just so happened that my dear sweet husband just happened to sit on unannounced friend that day at the Dr’s office and you would’ve have thought that the whole world stopped spinning by the look upon Taylor’s little face! It was something to the sorts of: “Don’t make me bust you up for sitting on my friend’s face.” Two year-olds can be quite intimidating. 🙂

So, after Kris took another seat on the other side of the waiting room per Taylor’s instructions…we, and everyone else in that waiting room were all introduced to, Spider.

And from that point on Spider was just a normal part of our family. When we got our jackets on, Spider got his jacket on. When we got into the car, spider got into the car. When we ate dinner, spider ate dinner. When we played toys, we had to play toys with Spider. I mean it was cute….for like two days.

And then Taylor introduced us to her whole CREW of imaginary friends. It became quite a mad-house with EJ, Camel and Uno running around. They just did all kinds of things like….stuff toilet paper down the toilet, eat snacks that weren’t allowed, take sharpies and the sorts to the walls, mirrors and anything else that needed a little sprucin up.

They were just a riot, I tell ya.

So it wasn’t such a sad day for this momma here when the imaginations when back to imagination land. For there were other sweet two year olds who needed comfort, support and oh ya…someone to blame on their little mis-happenings on. 🙂

When Hope turned the age of two I began to be on the look-out for such a friend in her life. Fortunately for me, Hope seemed way to logical to need such imaginary things in her life and she just stuck to the solid comfort things like, paci’s.

So I thought since the boo is now three and a half years old, that perhaps the Lord had felt I had enough children and don’t need the invisibles running around too. I mean, I thought….I was clear and free from this stage.

But then…..something happened.

It started with a little talking and giggles at night in the bed to the air. Then it started with whispers at the dinner table to the seat beside of her, along with some crooked glances from the boo every time I questioned her little sanity issues. Moved right into “voices” speaking in ways they should not. Telling her to do things like…dump hundreds of legos on the floor.

And then….I heard the words that made it all come together.

“Mommy…dis is Callie. She is my bestest friend eva.”

SWEET MERCY.

And so, I will brace myself for another round of the imaginations. I will have four kids instead of three. I will buckles seat belts around bodies that do not exist. I will place an extra dinner plate at the table for our guest with all her special requests. And I will make sure she is dressed, pottied and teeth are brushed. Because Callie will be the most high maintenance guest we will ever entertain.

But, because like all things in motherhood, I know this is a season. And so, I will treasure the last season with the…imaginations.

Since I know you, my bloggy readers MUST have some stories to share about the imaginations, I hope you will leave a comment sharing the visits, mishaps and fun times of the imaginations at your house. 🙂

Girl, this is gonna crack you up!!

I had an imaginary friend growing up. I was the youngest of four and my sister was 6 when I was born so they weren't "in" to playing with little sister so I had to do something! LOL

Ok, so my friends name was Jayvee. (sounds like gravy) My mom tells stories of me running outside naked and just laughing and talking 90 miles an hour to Jayvee! (I was about 2 lol) Then she tells the story of my PawPaw catching me writing on the walls and I told him that Jayvee had done it. He looked at me and said "Well you tell Jayvee that I'm going to spank him if he ever does it again". Needless to say my days as a freelance artist came to a screeching halt! I still remember the day Jayvee left me. I was at the top of a big slide on the playground when I was in Kindergarten and I distinctly remember him telling me he had to go. I said 'goodbye' and that was it!

Now here's the REALLY funny part!! The night I met Jimmy and we were getting to know each other he tells me he has a son and a daughter. He then says "My son's name is J.V."!!!!!!! Yes girl, shut your mouth right now that's what I said! Now I have a flesh and bones J.V.!!!!!!!

Isn't that hysterical! Sorry for the novelette but I had to share all that with you!! I love it when kids have their 'friends'!!! My Kayley has one now too!! LOVE it!!!

  • I was an only child and played by myself a lot. I had an imaginary friend named Jimmy and a dog named Scruffy. To this day I remember exactly how they looked. Jimmy left when I went to kindergarten and made all those friends. It's a special time. I'm so glad you are cherishing it. They grow up so fast.

  • Oh yes I do remember Spider and all of the friends that Taylor had! Dad and I can't remember the name of your's who also played a huge role in your growing up….:). Glad to see that Kennedy took to "Hold your horses" as it was a phrase used in this house just a few times when she was here!

  • My daughter was so vivid in her descriptions of her imaginary friends you could almost hear and see them.

Hope your move goes well. How exciting.

    Be blessed.

  • I think thats super sweet…and what a good mommy you are to make sure EVERYONE is well taken care of and loved! 🙂 ENJOY

  • You know, it's interesting. We've had some very creative imaginative kids in our family, but rarely an imaginary friend. Hmmmm……

    Blessings,
    Tammy ~@~

  • I just loved this!!! My sister and I had imaginary friends when we were little. They used to fly in on Monday's and leave on Friday's. My Mom would make them sandwiches etc… and they were such a part of every day life. They flew off and never returned when we started Kindergarten.

My son also had a couple of imaginary friends. Their names were "Huckle" and "Jenny". He had a lot of fun pretending with them…until our family Dr. found out! He was mortified. He wasn't one to support their presence. I remember laughing at our Dr. when he took it so seriously. I didn't think it was a big deal. "Huckle" and "Jenny" slowly disappeared over the course of time and now we enjoy the memories of the fun encounters and stories they were a part of from the past.

We all could use a bit more imagination,
    Joy
