I’ve said it. I’ve heard it. And…I know you have too.
“I want to do BIG things for God.”
I don’t necessarily believe there is anything wrong with having these types of thoughts roaming through our minds. I am however finding more and more that the enemy is using those words [meant for a God-cause] for his good.
Let me explain. For some reason our culture has come to this place of : Famous Christianity. It seems that the greater the recognition, approval or, title -there comes an overpowering ability to create an illusion in our minds. An illusion of entitlement, the need for bigger and the idea to chase something that isn’t ours to chase.
It’s dangerous.
Because I think more and more people are missing their purpose because they are trying to stomp out a person who is front and center -rather than just stepping where God is leading them.
Bigger is better, success means blessed and, fame my name. Yes, this is what our culture screams at us daily.
I believe we have forgotten that what seems like a “small purpose” in the past has led to turning the world upside-down. Remember the little boy with five loaves of bread and two fish? Have you thought about his story lately? His purpose was to be apart of the miracle that day. And as a result thousands of people came to know Jesus as their personal savior.
That little boy wasn’t investing into an illusion that day. He was investing all he had to what was right in front of him. And its made me wonder…how much do we miss because we are under the illusion of vision that is not ours?
I’ve heard people say things like: the moment you leave this earth your purpose is fulfilled.
I don’t really agree with that.
In fact, as harsh as this may sound, I believe people die every day who have missed their purpose. Because many people wander through life wondering what their purpose is. They chase one thing and then it gets old -so they move on to the next thing. They hear from God and try to seek things out and then it gets tough -so they give up.
It seems to be forgotten that a purpose is a life-process. From the day we are born we begin to shape and mold into the purpose that God has for us. Rain drops are sprinkled into our path like little clues here and there to guide us as to what we are supposed to do. People who love us will speak truth to confirm our gifts or, gently tell us that area may not be our gifting. The plans that get us along that road will change…always. But the purpose never wavers.
So, what do we do?
I think its pretty simple. Have you ever stopped and asked God to show you His purpose for your life? I don’t mean reading a book on being driven to purpose or taking some quiz to see what great qualities you possess in your life. I mean…asking God: What am I here for?
See, I don’t think we necessarily “miss” our purpose. I think what can happen is we just don’t ever receive it. I believe through simplicity and humility God will show you day by day why He dreamed up such an amazing person like you.
Remember these three things:
You are here for a great purpose. Luke 4:18 says, “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
Don’t give up.Galatians 6:9 says, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest it we do not give up.”
Your purpose may bring out your greatest fears. But…2 Timothy 1:7 says, “For God did not give us a spirit of timidity but of love, power and self-discipline.”

What a great post Nicki! Thanks for being transparent and willing to share your true feelings. I think the American culture breeds the mentality that bigger is better. We need to remember Jesus discipled 12 men his entire life, not 12,000. I needed this reminder today. Thank you!
This is just what i needed this morning!!!!
Thanks for the reminders!!!! I am going to put them where i can see them everyday!!!!
Yes and Amen!!! Great truth!!
