Day 2 -God is enough

As I continue through this 30 day personal journey to get closer to the heart of God, today I am in the book of Exodus -chapter 3.

Moses and the burning bush.

I’ve always loved the story of Moses. Inadequate, doubtful, not qualified and yet he was hand-picked, set-apart for an amazing journey. Moses is what I like to call an Unlikely Candidate. Meaning someone that you and I would most likely look at and say, “Really Lord? Your going to choose THEM?”.

Question 1: What does this passage say?

Moses is man who fears the unknown. So I can only imagine what his face looked like when the Angel of the Lord appeared to him in this burning bush [smile].

Moses was told to take off his sandals because the place he was standing was holy ground. The angel of the Lord then carefully instructs Moses in the way that he is going to go to lead the Israelite’s out of Egypt. There is a round of questions, doubts and extreme fear conversed. But God reminds Moses over and over that He is with Him. And that is more than enough to do this task.

Question 2: What does this passage mean?

I think the greatest nugget we can take from this passage is that this was a defining moment in Moses’s life. God is all about defining moments. My commentary said something I wanted to share about the fact that God told Moses to take off his sandals for that was holy ground.

It says: “All ground where God meets man and life-changing decisions are made becomes consecrated.”

Consecrated means: to make or declare sacred. Not much is sacred anymore, is it?

The other significant nugget from this passage is the strategy that God gives Moses. I think we leave a lot of things up to chance. I hear people say all the time, “Just let the cards fall into place.” And while I agree with that to some extent, I see here that Moses needed time to prepare. Our unique destiny’s require preparation.

But beyond preparing the greatest thing that we can comprehend is just what God told Moses: “I am with you.”

Question 3: What does this passage mean to me?

I’ve never had God speak to me through a burning bush…that I know. But I have had God show up in some of the most unlikely ways. A friend will call at a specific moment I’m seeking wisdom. I’ve passed a sign on the road with a message just for me. I’ll open my Bible to a very specific point I needed to be at.

But I think the greatest current example I have was something that happened over this past summer. Kris had just started his new company, I was preparing for two writer’s conferences and keeping up with all the girl’s summer activities.

I remember I got to this breaking point where I just really was questioning why I was trying to get published anymore. After all, all I kept getting was rejections.

I walked down the stairs and something inside of me told me to open the front door. So I did. And this is what I saw:

It was incredible. And yes, I realize that everyone in Charlotte got a rainbow that day.

But sometimes…you just gotta think God does something just for you.

That day my front porch became holy sacred ground for me. It was my burning bush moment. A moment in my life was defined that day.

God spoke to me through that rainbow as a reminder to never forget the promises that He has given to me. While I will still doubt like Moses, wonder if I will ever feel adequate enough to accomplish the great desire I have to see women set free from a painful past…I have to know that God is with me.

I still feel like the most unlikely girl possible. I don’t think I’m cool enough, pretty enough, strong enough, popular enough or even liked enough…I am not sure God ever intends for me to not feel those things.

But woven through the layers of my complicated heart is the unmistakable finger prints of God. That is the truth that I hold so strongly that I am not enough…but God is. He is enough to cover it all. My shame, my past, my fears, my doubts, my hurt…God is enough.

Have you had a burning bush moment? I’d love to hear about it. Feel free to share your story in the comments.

this was quite powerful. i like the part about a defining moment being holy ground. and your defining rainbow moment is a very precious thing. i love the story of moses too. he has the nearest relationship with God in the Bible next to Jesus.

something was going on in my heart for weeks. then i realized when i told God i would go wherever He wanted and do whatever He called me to. i qualified it a little, like Moses, telling God He knew how much i could handle. i ended up changing jobs, later moving out of town out of a bad situation. i’m in a wonderful singles’ group that i coordinate activities for and that is a praying, Bible studying group. i’m so blessed.
