It was a beautiful Fall afternoon as I drove through the pre-school carline. My then 4-year-old Kennedy Grace’s teacher opened the van door to let her climb in.
The teacher told Kennedy good-bye and said to me, “Kennedy told us the exciting news that she got baptized this past weekend!”
I tilted my head to the side and looked at my Kennedy as her face turned fire-engine-red.
Not wanting to embarrass her I smiled at the teacher and said, “No, we didn’t get baptized.” She winked and nodded her head, “Oh ok…”
As I pulled out from the carline I looked at Kennedy as she buckled her seat belt, “Why would you tell your teacher you got baptized?”
She started to cry, “I did get baptized.”
In my mind I replayed the weekend’s events tying to understand what could cause this confusion for her.
That weekend our church had baptized thousands of people and Kennedy was able to watch many of them. During the baptisms, Kennedy expressed her desire to be baptized but she didn’t really understand what it meant. So her daddy and I talked about how one day when she was able to understand, she would be able to be baptized too.
I thought we were all on the same page about it…apparently not.
“Kennedy, help me understand this…how did you get baptized?” I said to her.
She shouted on the top of her lungs, “I did it myself!” She then paused and said quietly, “In the bathtub, last night.”
I mean, how do you even respond to that? [smile]
I told her I was so sad I wasn’t there with her to experience it and maybe one day her whole family could all celebrate her decision to get baptized. [wink] She agreed.
And then, 3 years go by. This child learns more about the great big God she loves. She decides to follow Him for the rest of her life.
And then…she tells the world.
And we are all there.
I’m so proud of this little girl. She is 100% sassy but deep within her she truly loves God.
Her face glowed as she stepped into the baptism water. Raised to life…newness in Christ.
This is her God-journey and oh my…its beautiful. [tears…]

Nicki, you know one of my all time favorite Kennedy stories is her bathtub baptism. I am so proud of her! Watch out world… she is a world changer for sure!
