What’s It Like On The Other Side of Me

Giveaway

Do you ever wonder what it feels like to be on the other side of … you?

Today I’m sharing some honest thoughts about the time I was demoted from Room Mom [did you EVEN know that was possible?!] over on the Proverbs 31 Ministries Daily Devotion. I’d love for you to hop over and read it if you haven’t already.

If you’re visiting from the devotion today, you are most likely here for the giveaway.

It’s all about the free stuff.  [smiles]

But I’m really glad you stopped by!

I’ve just re-launched this site and if you like it here I hope you’ll become part of our little community by subscribing to the blog.

For the giveaway today, we have one of my FAVORITE books ever. The Best Yes by Lysa TerKeurst.

TheBestYes_large

I really love this book because as I shared in the devotion I struggle with saying too many yes’s. This book has helped me narrow down my Best Yes answers so much.

So, I want to pass the love along! The giveaway runs through Friday so enter as many times as you’d like. And if you already have the book, enter for a friend and I’ll send it to them on your behalf. 🙂

From Birmingham Al and I would love to win a copy of your book The Best Yes

  • At 56, I have gone back to school fulltime and it hasn’t been easy! I still have to run errands, clean, cook, and pick up after my husband and my son! If “The Best Yes” by Lysa TerKeurst can help me to get my men moving, I’d love a copy!

  • I would love a copy of The Best Yes! I am going to pray and ask the Lord to show me those areas in which my pride gets in the way. Immediately I am taken to my place of work where I often feel as though I know what I am doing and if everyone else could just see fit to do it MY way then we’d be sailing a smooth ship. Anyone else ever felt that way? I’ve come to realize through the power of the Holy Spirit that my way might not always be the best and that maybe, just maybe, even if It might appear that it is, I could still be hurting the feelings of others or frustrating them. I do need to take a step back sometimes and ask what its like to be on the other side of me and I thank the Lord for showing me this article and you for your obedience. May God bless you, those around you, and those who read the words of your message today exceedingly abundantly and beyond measure in everything that you do.

  • * I meant I that I needed to ask the Lord to show me more areas in which I am prideful

  • Too often I let my pride get in the way of taking on too much and becoming overwhelmed. Thank you for posing this question. It has given me much to think about.

  • Hi Nicki,

Just wanted to say that I like your new site & am glad you are up & running successfully, missed you. If my name comes up in the draw please pass it along to the next winner as I have a copy of Lysa’s book. A great read with much food for thought & application. Have a beautiful week.

    God Bless,
    Ruth

  • Hi Nicki,

I enjoyed reading your encouragement for the day. It was the exact words I needed to hear today. Just wanted to let Proverbs 31 know that the PWOC ladies in Vicenza Italy are using this book for our summer study. I am very excited to see how God uses the book in my life and the other ladies involved.

  • I’m from Missouri. I would love to win this book.

  • I wold love to win this book and then share with friends at church. I think there are a quite a few ladies at church who cold benefit from the message to include myself.

  • I’m from the Cleveland, Ohio area. I appreciated what you wrote and can totally identify with getting overloaded. I’d love to read The Best Yes and learn how to better balance my life. Thanks for the opportunity!

  • Hi Nicki
I love your new blog design. Yes I would love to receive this book.

  • Wow! Today’s devotional really hit home. I too struggle with saying yes or what would you like me to do or how can I help? I should know better. When I stop to pray and truly seek God first in guiding me, I soon realize that all the “serving” others, takes me away from God. I need to remember that question. Thank you so much!!! May God continue to bless you!

  • I am a 2nd grade teacher and Mom of 3, 3 and under. My struggle many times is,”What can I say Yes to?” I feel “Yes” is said too often to work and not enough to my family.

  • I’d love a copy of the book. Just when I think I have this balance thing down, something happens and I get off kilter. Then I get grumpy and am not pleasant to be “on the other side of”. Thanks so much for your encouraging words and giveaway!

  • I’m a “yes” girl. I’ve just recently realized many of my “yes'” over the years have been prideful “yes'”. I hope to win a copy of this book to help with realizing there are many ways that God needs me in areas that might not be so “showy”. Thank you for today’s Proverbs 31 devotion.

  • Rock Hill, SC. I’m getting ready to move… New town, new church, (hopefully) new job… I would love to use some insight from this book to make sure I am committing myself to all these things wisely.

  • Hi Nicki! I love your blog! And the idea of asking myself what is it like on the other side of me? I wish I had tryst when I was younger and trying to figure out my mother in law! Oh well, I will use it now! Thanks! And if I get chosen for the best yes, please pass it on to someone else as I have it! It was a great study!

  • How many times do we think we have to do it all, thanks for the reminder it’s OK to ask for help.

  • I would love to win a copy of this book. I have lived my life as a people pleaser telling everyone yes. My friend gave me a on of the window clings for “Is this my best Yes?” And I attached it to my cell phone to always be reminded to check my pride at the door and not be overwhelmed. This book would be a blessing at a time when I cannot afford to purchase it.

  • I am from NJ and I would love to win this book!!!

  • I would love to share The Best Yes with my girls bible study!!

  • From Virginia! What a great reminder in today’s devotional. I really love the question “What is it like to be on the other side of me?” WOW – what a great question to ask ourselves, especially when are are stressed or overwhelmed. This is perfect right now as life is a bit extra stressful and this will help me to (try) keep my patience in check. Especially dealing with loved ones.Thank you!

  • Nicki,
Hi! Thanks so much for helping me start my day off with a smile and LOL!

  • I am from Mobile, AL, and would love to read the book. “The Best Yes”. I have been trying to say No more this year. And I do not always ask for help….. So, yes, some insight an encouragement in this area would be a big plus. = )

  • Hi Nicki! I’m a mother of 2 little ones in elementary school from Bluefield, West Virginia.

  • I enjoyed your Crosswalk devotion! I don’t know where I am from anymore, but I live in Chattanooga and love it here!

  • Good morning! Read this post and said that is me. Time to go back and read the Best Yes again! I gave copies to my daughters and a friend…bought a few. I can think of someone else that would love to read this and if I gave mine away, maybe we can read it together. So glad to have you back in my inbox! God bless!

  • Great post! Thanks for the opportunity to win this book!

  • I found Proverbs 31 last year and the online bible study this year. I just loved the videos you gals did. I have another devotion that I get in my in box but it is not as inspiring or fun as Proverbs 31. In my life right now I have a husband who is too sick to work, and he feels that means he can’t do anything for anyone. I have an 18 year old who moved out 6 months ago because she “hates” me and her step dad” My 16 year old is about to find some place else to move as well, because I “don’t care about her.” My 8 year old tells me I don’t like you” On top of all that my husband and teen agers tell me I am a rotten parent. My husband calls me and the children names. I am trying to hold the family together. I think that if my husband would just learn to follow God/Jesus his life would be better, but he doesn’t believe at all. He says he never will. I fell like I should be saying yes to the things that I am saying no to and vise versa. I would love a copy of the book to help me weed through what I should say yes to and what I should not say yes to and how to say no with out hurting any one

  • This devotion definitely spoke to my heart today! I have a terrible problem of over-committing! In an effort to people-please, I often neglect the powerful word, “no.” But let’s be honest, the people-pleasing part of me is just a dolled-up version of pride. Scripture that I need to hold tight to is, “He must increase, but I must decrease.” John 3:30

Thank you for your beautiful devotion today!

  • I am from Peoria, Illinois. Just started following your blog last week 🙂 So glad I did! I’d have to say my pride gets in the way when NEEDING to ask for help. Like you, I have a hard time asking and think I can shuffle things I’ve committed to, to make it work. Then I’m exhausted and overwhelmed. I am a “yes” girl but have slowly been changing that 🙂

  • Hi Nicki. Thank you for sharing this. My judgment gets clouded because I try to please the people around me. And I tend to want to be noticed so I’ll do the work hoping for acknowledgment but then when it all gets to be too much, it’s usually the kind of acknowledgment you don’t want. I have read The Best Yes but I think I need to go back and reread it. Thank you!!

  • I’m in North Devon in the South West of England

  • I am from Huntsville, Alabama and would LOVE to win a copy of “The Best Yes.”
Thank you for sharing your words today on what it’s like to be on the other side. I take on too many tasks, and that leaves less time to really love and care for those who I am devoted to – my family, my friends, my clients, even myself! I get so wrapped up in so many things I fail to be the best I can be for God and others. “Right now, what’s it like to be on the other side of me?” is going to be my motto today – and hopefully for days to come. Thanks again!

  • I have 8 month old twin daughters and I am a Pastor’s wife plus we don’t live near any family. Sometimes our schedule gets very overloaded. I would love to read Lysa’s book! Thanks for the giveaway!

  • I am a part time outside the home worker and a full time mom. I am thankful for your devotion today .. I had several moments yesterday when I did exactly what you said. I took a look at the other side of the picture and humbled myself to my family. I am so thankful for the unlimited forgiveness of our
God who always me to humble myself without shame!!! He is so amazing! I would love a copy of Lysa’s book . Thanks for your encouragement!!

  • I am from Illinois (and I live on a farm too). Your devotional really spoke to me today…..I have 4 kiddos ranging from ages 4-10 and life can get so overwhelming and out of balance. I often find myself snapping at my husband or kids because I am so frustrated and exhausted trying to get everything on my to-do list checked off (with more things getting added all the time). What’s it like on the other side of me? That’s a question I definitely need to ponder more often. Would love a copy of Lysa’s book. Your new website looks great and I’m looking forward to Two minute Tuesdays! 🙂

  • I am from Columbus, Ohio. I love the blog post and can certainly relate! I tend to be a people pleaser which is a trait that lends itself to the overloading of one’s plate. Thank you for the opportunity to win the giveaway. 🙂

  • I am from Tennessee….loved your post today. I can totally relate and understand.

  • Thanks for this great devotional- it is so important to address our ability to overbook ourselves. Well done!

  • Thanks for your P31 devotion. I enjoyed your question “what’s it look like on the other side of me?” I can use this more in my life to make sure I am saying yes to something worthy of my time, energy and focus. I’ve not read this book but it’s been on my book list for a long time now, thanks for hosting this giveaway! Your blog design is beautiful–welcome back!

  • Today’s devo is one I will come back to again & again. Such a good reminder. Thanks from Houston, TX!

  • As a young single mother to a kindergartner, I can toy relate to saying too many yes’s. I work full time as a RN and during my son’s kindergarten year I signed up to be the room mom, thinking “how hard can it be?” Little did I know, there are a lot of projects for a kindergartener and A LOT of cutting! I too switched over from full time room mom to assistant room mom. I would love to have a copy of this book! 🙂

  • Busy pastor’s wife, mom, and grandmother from Ohio! Would love to have this book you are offering.

  • Hi, Nicki!

I am a single mother from Hershey, PA (Chocolatetown, USA!) and would love to win a copy of your book “The Best Yes.” As women, with or without children, I believe it is imperative for us to prioritize our time and commitments. I am learning to listen to that still, small voice of God, a.k.a., The Holy Spirit, to determine where and when I should allocate my time, talents, skill, abilities, finances, etc…Other individuals in my life, such as family and friends, may not understand why I do the things I do; however, I am not asking them to understand God’s will for my life, only to respect it.

  • Hi Nicki!

What a great blog post you wrote this morning! How timely, as well.
“The Best Yes” would be a blessing to me as learning to say no has been a challenge for me.

    Thank you!

    Blessings and love,

    Johnetta

  • I’m currently from Salt Lake City and would love a copy of “The Best Yes”. I’m a teacher at the end of the school year and my life has felt like chaos this last month.

  • I would love to win. I’m a full time teacher, mother of an almost 10th grader, 3 year old, and 13 month old and I just started direct sales. I need to take the summer to spend time with my family, get organized, and learn to give my best yes!

  • I’m from Lansing, MI. The concept of “What’s it like to be on the other side of me?” is very interesting. I was just reading about the need to be more graceful and respectful in our speech toward those closest to us. Too many times it’s easy allow answers to come flying out of our mouths without taking our whole situation into account. Oh how I really do want the best, not just the good.

  • I’m from Georgia and I love reading your blogs!

  • Thank you so much for you devotional today. I had a friend recommend I check out the Proverbs 31 Devos, and today was the first time I’ve made it over there. Ironically enough, the post was like a punch to the gut for me (the good kind), because that it totally my problem. It’s one of the things that makes me a little afraid of becoming a parent, because I have trouble saying no and not overloading my plate as it is. Especially as a *somewhat* public figure in my small town (the only reporter for one of our two small town newspapers), I often find myself being asked to help out in many, many different charity events and fundraisers and end up crazy overloaded and not able to live my life. My marriage, my home life and many of the things I have on my ever-growing to-do list get benched in an effort to keep up with everything else. I feel like all too often, I end up disappointing people because my commitment follow-through ends up being less than what I had originally intended.

  • Whoops, I forgot the ‘where I am from part’! I’m from a small town in Ontario, Canada, called Orangeville.

  • I have heard nothing but amazing things about the Best Yes and would love to win a copy. Thank you for sharing your story, I think many of us can relate!

  • That was a great post and a perspective I don’t usually think about, thank you!
I live in Magnolia TX and would love to read The Best Yes!

    • From Macon, GA, although right NOW I’m at High Falls Park waiting on a yurt full of 10 y.o. boys to wake up from my son’s bday campout, and in about 2 weeks I will be “from” Auburn, AL, as my family finally makes our move, after my husband took a promotion 8 months ago and since then has been traveling ~4 days per week, leaving my son & I behind to finish out his school year. After 5 moves to 3 different states over the past 14 years, I initially was not feeling another move, & was very upset & built up a wall between myself & my husband. But after 4 months of praying the wrong prayers (what I wanted, instead of for God to show me what HE wanted), I finally got His message, loud & clear. I was to trust & follow my husband as leader of our household & family. I was able to look back over the previous 4 months & see all the little signs, whispers, & nudges from Him showing & telling me that I was tired & worn thin & needed to move to change! I had taken on TOO much in the 5 years we’ve been in Macon (the longest we’ve stayed in 1 place in 14 years)…all started with room mom, then spiraled into a mound of responsibilities that brought me more involved with most everyone except my husband. Room mom, officer of parent-teacher group board, fundraising committee…team mom…small group leader, Sunday school teacher, kids Praise & Worship Team leader, women’s bible study co-leader…public speaking, civic organization (Sertoma Club) volunteer, & mentoring for my career (SLP)…the list goes on! After work & being a Mom (handling everything even when my husband was home almost as if to prove to him that I could do it all by myself so no need to worry about us when he was off working), I had many other tasks on my priority list to keep me busy until bedtime, which left me no time or energy for my husband, whether on the phone, Skype or in person. So, when God finally showed me that He was behind my husband’s promotion and new work territory, it all made sense. If only I had realized that earlier, we could’ve made the move close to the beginning of this last school year, rather than finishing out the year, & my marriage would not have suffered as much stress & strain! Glad God showed me the way & look forward to seeing how He guides me, after our move, in filling my time building my marriage & family back up!

  • From Statesboro, Georgia. Would love to win the book. Your devotional was great!! I needed it!!

  • We are going through a study at church that explained we all have 3 characters.
    1. the character we exhibit.
    2. the character we think we have.
    3. the character we truly have.

It was eye opening, to say the least. God Bless!

  • I’m from Pennsylvania. Juggling commitments is never easy. I think this book would be a great tool.

  • Thank you for this giveaway! I say waaaYYYY too many Yes’s!!! Self supporting mom of 3, working 3 jobs and member of many groups! • Burleson, Tx! And unfortunately, I feel like I let the same things happen to me. It’s definitely something I need to worn on and pray on!

  • Thank you for today’s devotional! I too have committed myself without thinking.

  • This spoke to my heart this morning in so many ways. Thank you for the truth of this and thank you for the opportunity to win this book. I would love it. One of my friends loaned me her copy but I didn’t get to read it before I felt like I needed to return it because of my too many commitments. Thank you again. I would love this!

  • As a current room mom looking forward to the end of my obligation, boy can I relate to your devotional on P31!
    Thank you!

  • Hi! I am from Metamora, IL, a little farm town in Central Illinois. This blog post really hit home for me. These past few days I’ve been constantly adding more and more activities, events, and obligations into my planner and the feeling is overwhelming. With so many demands I can feel myself being stretched thin. The devotional was very convicting of the pride that is underlying some of these commitments.

  • Hi there,
I came across your blog just this morning. I live in Daphne, AL and this blog post hit home for sure! I was in this exact spot myself just a couple years ago. I love the question you’ve presented to ask yourself, “what’s it like on the other side of me?” I am always using questions like these to help me better understand the people around me and how they respond to me. Thanks for the post! I’d also love a copy of the book if I may say so myself! 🙂

  • I would love to win The Best Yes, who doesn’t love to win? I feel this will be a great addition fort summer reading but I pray the woman who may need it the most wins!

And Nicki, we’ve all been there! Happily Humbled,
    Funsize

  • Thanks for sharing!!! I would love to win this book!!! I’ve been wanting to read it and hope I get the chance! GOD BLESS!

  • I know all about busyness and room mom roles… Yes Father has worked on me and my commitments as mom, wife in my home and p/t job outside the home… My counselor taught me when I say yes to something, I must take something out of my schedule to make room for the yes. I’m also a work in progress… THanks for your blog 🙂 XO

  • It’s a beautiful day here in Central California! Nikki, Your new site is lovely. Thanks for the perspective, “What’s it like on the other side of me?” Hard to face the truth of that question but definitely better in the long haul of things.

  • I love this idea of, basically, how do people perceive me. Sometimes I am oblivious – I’m the person who walks into a meeting with toothpaste in my hair. So thinking more strategically, so to speak, as to what am I showing to the world at this particular moment, is a good topic for self-reflection. Thanks, Nicki!

  • I’m from Michigan and have heard so many wonderful things about this book! I can’t wait to read it!!

  • Hello there! Stopping by to say hi from Orlando, FL for a chance to win the giveaway. Thank you for the opportunity 🙂

  • I curretly live in Neavada. and beeb in the wild wild west for over 30 years. Iwas born in midwest.
    God bless u all
Thanks for the chance to win.

  • Where was this book when I needed it!!! Oh, but I still need it! Thanks for the opportunity to win it.

  • 3 yrs ago, I took too many things on myself, some were responsibilities but some were hard to me to say “no”. I was overwhelmed and frustrated. I was not able to keep my word on deadlines. So, I had to re- evaluate myself and gave up my two part time work/business to be able to just take care of my family and I see the blessings through this. I would love to win to copy of the Best Yes to read and to pass it along to my friend. Thank you.

  • This book has been on my “to read” list forever, but is on forever hold at the library. Your blog post just confirms even more that it is exactly what I need!

  • Hello,
I enjoy Lisa’s books. They are real life. Always speaks to me and my current situation and I am sure this one will as well.
Will love to have a copy!

  • Hamilton, Ontario, Canada
Would love to win this book 🙂

  • Thanks so much for your story yesterday. I am always trying to do everything at 100%. The worst part is that I actually think that I am. To humble oneself and admit we have shortcomings is so difficult. Thanks for the encouragement!
    -Alexandria, VA

  • I would like a copy of the best yes. As a college student I find it hard to balance everything.

  • I thank you for your story. I am that person. I have a hard time saying “no”. And then I’m overloaded. But pride keeps me there. It blinds me to my limitations. Your question is a hard question to ask oneself. It forces us to take an honest look at who we are, what we are doing, and why we are doing it. I would love to have Lisa’s book. I want to be the best ‘me’ I can be but only on a way that honors God., not my pride.
    West York, IL
    Susan Bynum

  • Asking for help is a hard thing – a humbling thing to do. Thanks for the reminder that sometimes – maybe more times than I care to admit, it’s the right thing to do.

  • From SC. Would love to read The Best Yes…thank you for the giveaway!

  • I would enjoy reading this book. Everyone that I know that has read it, felt it had good words for them.

  • I enjoyed the story and it is true on so many levels. We get bogged down and many times we can’t see because pride come in and we don’t want to hurt someones feels or let anyone down. But I have since learned that there is anointing in the word No, and if we pray before we commit we will do better.
